Five killed in holiday weekend crashes


CHICAGO (STMW) -- Five people were killed and at least two others badly injured in auto accidents over the long commemorative Day holiday weekend in the Chicago area.

The most distinguished of these was the death on Friday morning of 10-year-old Calvin Santos, who was walking between two parked SUVs in Rogers Park when the van that Martin Candia was driving supposedly slammed into one of the vehicles, pushing it forward and crushing the boy. The collide happened about 5:50 a.m. Friday.

Candia, 30, of Chicago, is facing crime charges that could send him to prison for up to 14 years.

The boy — who with his 3-year-old sister and his father was on his method to a relative’s home — died about two hours later.

Candia was charged with crime drunken driving and reckless homicide — as well as numerous traffic offenses, including driving on a suspended license — following the collide in the 6900 block of North Ashland Avenue.

On Monday, Cook County Judge Maria Kuriakos-Ciesil ordered Candia imprisoned on $350,000 bail.

Following the collide, Candia registered a blood-alcohol level of .109 — which is above the .08 legal limit — prosecutor Melissa Meana said through Candia’s bond hearing. He also failed a field sobriety test, she said.

A 13-year-old boy was seriously injured after he was struck by a vehicle Friday afternoon in the Southwest Side Marquette Park area.

The boy was crossing the highway in the 7100 block of South Ridgeway Avenue at 3:21 p.m. when he was struck by a motor vehicle, police News Affairs Officer Darryl Baety said.

The boy was 13 years aged; police News Affairs Officer Anne Dwyer sad.

He was transported to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in dangerous condition, Baety said.

The driver, Steven Mendoza, 19, was issued citations for failure to decrease speed to avoid an mishap; no insurance; inattentive driving and pedestrian in the roadway-due care, Dwyer said.

The driver of the motor vehicle was still on the scene when police arrived, Baety said.

A west suburban man died Friday following an auto mishap in Melrose Park.
