NHTSA Opens Safety Investigation of Mercedes-Benz E-Class

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is investigating 100,000 Mercedes-Benz E-Class sedans from model years 2005 and 2006 since airbags may not deploy correctly.

According documentation filed with NHTSA: The TSBs [Technical Service Bulletins] address reports of air bag caution lamp lighting accompanied by a diagnostic fault code 9103 or 9123 indicating a high resistance in the driver's frontal air bag detonation squib 1 or 2 (the air bag dismissal circuits), respectively. This condition may result in failure of the driver's first stage and/or second stage inflator to deploy in the event of an above deployment doorsill frontal collide.

According to Left Lane News, NHTSA has received four complaints related to the subject. But no crashes, injuries or losses have been reported.

Mercedes-Benz has not issued an bureaucrat recall for the E-Class. However, depending on NHTSA’s findings, the investigation may guide to one.
