BMW launches 5-Series sedan


MUMBAI: The German luxury car producer BMW launched the sixth generation new 5-Series sedan here on Friday.

The new BMW 5 series is obtainable in two petrol variants (535i and 523i) and two diesel variants (530d and 525-d) at BMW Pavilion in the city.

Launching the 5-Series edition, Peter Kronschnabl, President BMW in India said, Luxury car market in India is growing speedy. Previous year over 9,000 luxury cars were sold. We think over 11,000 cars will be sold this fiscal. BMW again will be the major supplier in this segment.

We hope to sell approximately 4,000 units. The 5-Series variety begins at Rs 38.9 lakhs (ex-showroom Mumbai). The 535i will be totally built up and imported from the Munich plant while the rest of the cars will be manufactured in BMW’s Chennai plant. 525d will price Rs 39.9 lakh and 530d will be on higher end at Rs 45.90 lakh.

The company is also considering ramping its manufacture facilities in Chennai. Our Chennai plant can produce around 3,000 cars in a single shift and we are planning to raise our manufacture capacity, he said, adding We will be producing BMW X1 in the Chennai place. According to sources, BMW is planning to launch the small SUV in India by the end of 2010.

For Kronschnabl who steered the BMW to numero uno position in India during the previous three years BMW 5-Series was his last launch as he is moving to Russia by the ending of this month.
