When Mayor-Elect Steve Benjamin was involved in a car accident later than election night he requested an exterior agency to come in and perform the investigation. Now city committee agrees with him and have voiced their opinions. The police chief has said he will not give up control of the review. In Columbia it is time for common sense to prevail over the common institutional stupidity.
Mr. Benjamin had it correct from the first day. The accident has left a woman in decisive condition though she has improved. The prudent thing to do is bring in the main road Patrol who have a sterling reputation as accident investigators. More prominently they are independent.
No matter what happens currently, because the city fumbled the verdict at the outset, there will always be conspiracy theorists. This needn't be if common logic prevailed.
