ST. ALBANS, N.Y. (WPIX) - A woman has been charged in connection with a deadly Queens car crash in which two kids died and three others were left hospitalized.
The crash occurred Monday evening shortly before 5 p.m. at the intersection of Dunkirk avenue and Arcade Ave. in St. Albans. Sheila Bethea, 45, has been taken into police custody after establishment discovered she had a blood alcohol level of .03. The state's legal limit is .08.
According to police, a 5-year-old girl, identified as Melissa Elh-Mirra, died early Tuesday and a 15-year-old , identified as Katherine Willis, died Monday night. Three other people within the vehicle were reportedly treated for less solemn injuries.
The driver of the other vehicle, 63-year-old Carl Williams, was treated and released from the hospice.
Authorities said Bethea was driving a Mazda minivan with six passengers - five of whom were foster kids - when she drove into looming traffic and slammed into a Toyota van.
According to reports, Bethea claimed her bottom had gotten stuck on the gas peddle as she was driving the children to a foster care workplace.
Bethea has been charged with second-degree manslaughter, second-degree assault and endangering the interests of a child. If convicted, she faces a seven-year prison term.
