BMW's electric Megacity revealed

BMW released the first sketch of its Mega city electric vehicle last week, but currently we can reveal the car in all its glory.

Our computer image is based on the sketch and shows what BMW's first electric car could seem like when it goes on sale in 2013.

The four-seater will be based on technology already being trialed in the battery-powered Mini E and 1 Series. It will also utilize a carbonfibre passenger cell to keep weight down.

The car is likely to be expensive as a result, so BMW might lease it rather than sell it to customers.

The rear-engined, rear-wheel-drive car has a 100Kw motor beneath the floor and is anticipated to have a variety of between 100 and 130 miles. It's bigger than a Mini, but lesser than the 1 Series.

The project is the first in a string of electric cars that the company says will ultimately account for up to 12% of its sales by 2020.

2010 Emergency Budget: What does it mean for motorists?

George Osbourne promised at the beginning of today's crisis budget that he wouldn't hide the hard choices from the British citizens. He positively didn't, but the motorist was hit no harder than anyone else.

The Chancellor promised that £4 out of each £5 required to reduce the national deficit would be establish through spending cuts rather than tax rises, but it is the headline tax rise which will brunt on the nation's drivers.

As some predicted, Mr Osbourne chose to augment the rate of VAT from 17.5 per cent to 20 per cent from January 4 2011.

The cost at the pumps will increase thanks to the rise, but there is no accompanying rise in fuel duty beyond that which was previously expected.

The additional 2.5 per cent will also brunt on the cost of buying a car, as well as having one serviced. As an example, the cost of a £16,000 Ford Fiesta 1.4 TDCI (one of the country's most popular cars) is set to increase by £400.

In line with the Conservatives pre-election proposals, the Chancellor suggested that the brunt of oil prices on the cost at the pumps would be examined to see if there's a way of stabilizing them in the future. Whether this results in the adoption of a fuel duty stabilizer remains to be seen.

The Liberal Democrat policy of a rebate for pastoral areas is also set to be studied.

The future of the Department of Transport's budget will be detailed in October, but with the defenseless departments facing a 25 per cent cut in their spending it is secure to presume that some road building projects will have to be shelved.

Bonhams auctions the 20th century's 'most controversial' car...

That's how people describe the DeLorean, and an example with a exclusive history is up for sale

One of the 20th century's most contentious and fabled motor cars, a 1981 DeLorean DMC12 Coupé, will be sold by Bonhams as fraction of the Goodwood Festival of Speed on July 2.

This example is particularly unique, having once been owned and driven by Miranda Guinness, Countess of Iveagh.

The automobile, formerly on long-term display at the Robert Guinness Steam Museum in Dublin and the Irish Museum of Transport, has attracted a pre-sale approximation of £15,000 - 20,000.

The brainchild of ex-General Motors executive John Zachary DeLorean, the DeLorean sports car project found a home in Northern Ireland subsequent a grant from the British government.

Under the helm of a former Pontiac designer, Bill Collins, the car attracted much concentration for its stylish coupé body and doors which opened in a characteristic gull-wing fashion.

The highly-anticipated DeLorean lastly arrived in 1980 but quickly ran into quality control problems that were not at all recovered. This was additional exacerbated to the creator's indictment on drug charges in 1982.

Car parking wars

Will councils antagonise residents by charging additional for parking permits for the most polluting cars? As long as it's under the guise of traffic management, it seems that councils can accuse what they like.

Driveways, garages - even forecourts, if your car is little enough - could soon have more impact on the value of your home than a Small bone kitchen or converted attic, following a staged swing in the way local councils across Britain are now milking the motorist.

It started three years ago when Richmond Borough Council in wealthy south-west London announced plans to accuse residents up to three times more for a parking permit if they had a bigger-engine car.

Few believed the scheme would be approved; the very idea that a council would levy a high fee on a stationary car was ridiculous according to motoring organisations.

Other observers believed it improbable that local politicians would alienate voters by penalizing bigger families - frequently those from ethnic minorities - who are forced to rely on bigger cars.

They were wrong on both counts and reckoned without the steely decide of Richmond council. By April 2007 the west London authority had introduced the scheme to the fury of many in the borough.

Overnight, the cost of parking - apart from for those with driveways - went from a maximum of £100 to £300, or a staggering £450 for a second vehicle.

Hammond rules out road pricing and fuel duty hikes as he takes over at DfT

New Secretary of State for Transport Philip Hammond has ruled out highway pricing and said he will 'stabilise’ fuel prices for motorists, but recognized that motoring has got to be greener.

We will end the war on motorists, said the conventional MP for Runnymede and Weybridge. Motoring has got to get greener but the car is not going to go out.

Hammond said the new Conservative-Liberal Democrat alliance administration will hold a consultation on stabilising the cost of fuel so that petrol prices don’t go up if there is an increase in world oil prices. The Liberal Democrats had talked of an augment in fuel duty.

Hammond also confirmed the new management would not introduce road pricing on existing roads, a measure that had been supported by the Liberal Democrats in their manifesto. However, tolls may be introduced on latest roads.

As well as road transport, in his new role Hammond will also be accountable for rail and air transport. Here there are more areas of accord between the Tories and the Lib Dems.

In their coalition agreement, released on Wednesday, they confirmed that they would ascertain a high-speed rail network and cancel the third runway at Heathrow as well as decline additional runways at Gatwick and Standsted.

The Conservatives have, however, bowed to broadminded Democrat demands to replace the air passenger duty with a per flight duty.

On the issue of a £30 billion road building programme planned by the previous Labour administration and opposed by the Liberal Democrats, Hammond recognized the Government would have to look at new and original ways of funding them.

Hammond has been joined at the Department for Transport by conventional MP Theresa Villiers.

Columbia City Council Wants Outside Agency Investigating Benjamin Accident

When Mayor-Elect Steve Benjamin was involved in a car accident later than election night he requested an exterior agency to come in and perform the investigation. Now city committee agrees with him and have voiced their opinions. The police chief has said he will not give up control of the review. In Columbia it is time for common sense to prevail over the common institutional stupidity.

Mr. Benjamin had it correct from the first day. The accident has left a woman in decisive condition though she has improved. The prudent thing to do is bring in the main road Patrol who have a sterling reputation as accident investigators. More prominently they are independent.

No matter what happens currently, because the city fumbled the verdict at the outset, there will always be conspiracy theorists. This needn't be if common logic prevailed.

Mr. Benjamin and City Council are right. It is time for an exterior review. actually, past time for it.

U.S. seen vulnerable to radicalised immigrants

The U.S. will also have to follow the matter the way Canada and Great Britain did. There has been a lot of pre-emptive, pro-active interference in the form of social reform programmes.

The arrest in Pakistan late previous year of five young Muslim Americans should have set off alarm bells.

But Pakistani police said the five students from the U.S. state of Virginia were alleged of trying to plot attacks in Pakistan or possibly in neighbouring Afghanistan.

There has been no suggestion that any of the five, who are being tried in Pakistan on terrorism charges, planned on going home to unleash violence. They said they only wanted to assist fellow Muslims in Afghanistan with medical and financial aid.

Shahzad might have been motivated by a similar sense of unfairness, said Amir.

The Americans don't like to confess it but just as their occupation of Iraq fueled radicalism and gave al Qaeda a foothold there which formerly it didn't have, the American occupation of Afghanistan is also fueling extremism, said Amir. (Editing by Chris Allbritton)

Drivers find same crashes and late passes at new Talladega

TALLADEGA, Ala. — More than half the cars in Sunday's Aaron's 499 were either damaged or smashed at Talladega Super speedway.

Drivers, including teammates, were upset with apiece other. The finish was theatrical, with Kevin Harvick waiting until the last 500 yards to pass Jamie McMurray to win by 3 feet.

There were 88 lead changes amongst 29 drivers, both NASCAR records. And it was the first time NASCAR used all three of its green-white-checkered ultimately periods.

The race was supposed to be a testament to NASCAR's return of the rear spoiler and fresh rules that allowed aggressive bump-drafting. The result was another distinctive Talladega race.

It was a lot of amusing for the majority of the race. It was mad at the end, like it always is, said Jeff Gordon, who was involved in two crashes in ultimately.

Talladega is known for huge packs of traffic - and the big wrecks that come with it. There was a 10-car pileup in the center of the race, a five-car accident at the end of directive and a nine-car crash during two of the overtimes. In all cases, poor verdict, not cars or the rules, was to blame. The first crash started when Kyle Busch rammed Johnny Sauter from at the back. The second came later than Mike Bliss ran into Jeff Burton. The third started when Joey Logano's bump Ryan Newman.

Dale Earnhardt Jr., who only trails his belatedly father and Gordon for the most wins at Talladega, said no topic how many changes are made with the rules, Talladega won't change.

It is a lottery. Points racing, racing for a finals, shouldn't be a lottery. These races here are raffle picks, Earnhardt said.

Juan Pablo Montoya had a proposal for anyone who didn't like the action at Talladega - stay house.

If you don't desire to be here, then don't be here, he said later than finishing third. I think its chill, and I think the fans feel affection for it. It [stinks] when you wreck, but the show isn't going to find any better than this.

The subsequently time the same rules package will be used is July 3 at Daytona International Speedway. That track isn't as wide as Talladega and won't permit for the same kind of three-wide, 10-deep packs of traffic.

Audi's Stronghold in China Threatened by BMW, Mercedes-Benz

For the final 20 years, Audi has been top dog in the Chinese luxury auto market. Now, its reign may be threatened as BMW and Mercedes-Benz begin to increase traction in the emerging market.

Mercedes and BMW have more upside than Audi in rising markets, so it will be hard for Audi to achieve its target,London-based automotive psychoanalyst Arndt Ellinghorst told Automotive News.

As the world's single largest automotive market, Chinese customers are increasingly significant to BMW and Mercedes. As a result, both have crafted vehicles specially aimed at the Chinese market. Tomorrow at the Beijing auto demonstrate, BMW will unveil an extended 5 Series, while Mercedes is set to debut its latest longer E Class. The reasoning for extended wheelbases is that the wealthier Chinese population is usually chauffeured.

Former this month, Audi posted its first quarter sales figures. With a strong start to 2010, Audi was capable to secure the second place spot in global luxury sales, bumping Mercedes down to third. The Ingolstadt based automaker hasn't fared so healthy in China lately. Over that preceding 6 years, Audi's market share has slipped from 66 percent losing to 46 percent. BMW has climbed from 16 to 23 percent, though Mercedes more than doubled its share, from 7 to 16 percent.

Audi had 159,000 deliveries in 2009, but has a target to sell 200,000 this year. On track for that goal, it sold 51,449 in the first quarter this year. Previous year BMW sold 90,500 vehicles, but is on track to surpass that mark, with 34,179 sell through March. Mercedes sold 24,100 vehicles in the first quarter of 2010, and should meet its 100,000 sales target. BMW is investing $749 million in a new Chinese factory to double capability to 100,000 units annually. Mercedes previously has a 100,000 unit production capacity in China.

The possible of the Chinese market remains enormous, and our targets are correspondingly ambitious, Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche said very last week.

AP-GfK Poll: Americans say US cars top Asian autos

WASHINGTON — America's love affair with the automobile has a latest spark — a renewed affection for U.S.-made cars after a long dalliance with alien automakers.

Slightly more Americans now say the United States makes greater vehicles than Asia does, with 38 percent saying U.S. cars are greatest and 33 percent naming autos made by Asian countries, according to a connected Press-GfK Poll.

The survey suggests those numbers are mainly fueled by a plunge in Toyota's reputation and an upsurge in Ford's. The poll was conducted in March, as Toyota was being roiled by frightening publicity over its recall of more than 8 million vehicles around the world and allegations that it responded sluggishly to protection concerns.

Though the U.S. advantage is unassuming, it marks a significant turnabout for American automakers battered by slump and relentless competition from foreign manufacturers. When the same question was asked in a December 2006 AP-AOL poll, 46 percent said Asian countries made better cars, while just 29 percent preferred American vehicles, reflecting a insight of U.S. automotive inferiority that began taking hold about three decades ago.

Toyota's problems are not to be minimized now, David Williams, dean of the business management school at Wayne State University in Detroit, Mich., said in explaining the manner shift.

In both AP polls, Japan — home to brands similar to Toyota, Honda and Nissan — was by far the dominant Asian nation volunteered as producing the greatest cars. European autos — which include BMW, Mercedes Benz and Volkswagen — were called pinnacle quality by 15 percent last month, about the equal as the 17 percent who said so four years ago.

Williams and others also cited a new look Americans are giving U.S. automakers, particularly Ford and General Motors. Though GM and Chrysler went through bankruptcy previous year and the federal government invested $80 billion to keep them afloat, GM has revamped its lineup with more fuel-efficient and intersect vehicles. Analysts say Ford revived its reputation by not accepting the taxpayer rescue and improving its vehicles' gasoline mileage.

Mercedes Shooting Break Concept

A concept car showing Mercedes-Benz's idea of how coupés might appear in the near future is making its globe debut at the Auto China show.

With some features recognizable from the current CLS coupé (for which a production version of the concept might turn out to be the substitute) and the SLS AMG supercar, the Shooting Break is described by Mercedes in terms similar to this: The vocabulary of the design idiom includes the complementary play between lines and exaggerated areas, which combine to make an animated area of interaction. And that sort of thing.

In simpler language, the gunfire Break is partly an indication of how Mercedes design is developing, and partially a way of combining a coupé and an estate car. No luggage ability figures have been announced, but we envisage the car should be able to carry quite a lot of stuff.

The concept car engine is a 306bhp 3.5-litre V6 petrol unit. Mercedes describes this as the precursor to a new generation of direct injection engines, and says that attention has been paid to the competence of the ancillary units (presumably the alternator, amongst other things), and that there is also a start/stop system.

A utterance about the name. Estate cars used to be known in the US as gunfire brakes, a term derived from carriages used to train wild horses in the 19th century. We have never come crossways the identical-sounding shooting break earlier than, but Mercedes says it was too used.

Toyota set to pay US fine, deny cover-up over gas pedals

NEW YORK: Toyota Motor Corp is predictable to pay a USD 16.38 million fine imposed by US authorities for deteriorating to speedily notify them of problems with accelerator pedals, but plans to deny intentionally covering up defects in its vehicles, US media reports said today.

The reports, citing an bureaucrat from the US Department of Transportation, came as the Japanese auto huge neared its Monday deadline on whether it would agree to pay the fine -- the largest civil penalty ever imposed on an automaker below US laws.

Toyota is possible to accept the fine in order to focus efforts on recovering consumer confidence rather than further dragging out the recall topic by battling the US government.

Previous this month, the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration ordered Toyota to disburse the fine on the grounds that it delayed reporting to regulators and failed to issue a recall over defective gas pedals until January despite discovering the problems in late September.

Automakers are required to inform the NHTSA within five business days if they determine that a fault exists.

But Toyota has been negotiating with the US government on how it can disprove the claim that it deliberately hid the defects over sticky gas pedals since such an acknowledgement would harm its position as it faces a string of lawsuits by owners of Toyota vehicles.

The US safety regulator agency is also continuing its inquiry to see if there were additional violations that warrant more penalties on Toyota.

The company has recalled over 8 million vehicles internationally, including some of its top-selling models such as the Prius hybrid and the Camry, more problems with accelerator pedals, floor mats, and brakes that could reason sudden acceleration.
