EU sees new car registrations rising

European car makers -- most still benefiting from cash-for-clunkers schemes -- reported heavy rises Friday in latest car registrations both for March as well as the first quarter of 2010.

March registrations were 10.8 percent over the same 2009 month, said the EU car makers alliance, known by its French acronym of ACEA. First quarter new car registrations were up 9.2 percent from the primary quarter of 2009, but still 9.4 percent lower the first quarter of 2008, it added.

Most major markets recovered ground compared to untimely 2009, reflecting the ongoing effect of great discounts for buyers exchanging their old cars for new, cleaner model, said ACEA spokeswoman Quynh-Nhu Huynh.

One immunity was Germany: its new car registrations in March shrank by 26.6 percent -- to 294,375 units. Huynh said the cause for that is that Germany's cash discount scheme started former and therefore also ended earlier than in the other 26 EU nations.

In March, 1,637,478 latest cars were registered in the EU. Britain accounted for approximately 400,000 new cars, up 26.6 percent from March, 2009, making it the biggest EU market.

Other markets showed burly growth: March new car registrations in Italy were up 19.6 percent, in France by 17.9 percent and in Spain by 63.1 percent compared with the small levels of March, 2009.

Results elsewhere were mixed - ranging from a nearly 41 percent rise in the Czech Republic to a drop by 53.3 percent in Hungary.

For the first quarter of 2010, ACEA put fresh car registrations in the EU at 3,671,871, up 9.2 percent from the same 2009 period. Of the main markets, only Germany posted a drop (of 22.8 percent). Increases were register in France (16.9 percent), Italy (23.3 percent, Britain, (27.3 percent) and Spain (44.5 percent.)
