TROLLHATTAN, Sweden—After a year of dramatic discussions, the small but proud Swedish automobile creator Saab—known to be born from jet planes —got an order from parent company General Motors Co. previous week to shut down operations.
An attempt to sell the company to Dutch supercar maker Spyker had hit a snag late last week, but a last-ditch effort by the possible buyer has rekindled discussions.
Saab’s destiny now hangs in the balance, ahead of the Dec. 31 time limit set by GM, and has shocked the Swedes and the Swedish automobile business. When the tides of first shock subside, it is time for the Swedish manufacturing industry to wake up and learn from the experience.
