Auto pact a boon for Port

The Port of Grays Harbor is set to become an export hub for Chrysler automobiles as fraction of a new shipping accord that could bring thousands of vehicles across local docks.

The Pasha Group, which specializes in transporting and processing new cars for manufacturers, announced the new contract Wednesday to direct as many as 25,000 Chrysler vehicles through Grays Harbor next year for shipment to Asia and Australia.

Port Commissioner Jack Thompson said in a news release Port officials and longshore workers are excited to take on the new traffic.

The Port of Grays Harbor looks forward to being the Pacific Northwest export point for this significant new export opportunity,” he said. “We are confident that Grays Harbor’s tactical location, infrastructure and labor force will make this export operation a success for our partners.

Thompson said this morning the accord calls for 17,000 to 25,000 Chrysler vehicles to come into Grays Harbor via railroad from five factories in Detroit. Those cars would then be loaded onto Partner Shipping vessels at Marine Terminal 4. The first vessel is scheduled for Jan. 24.

It’s surely going to help us monetarily, Thompson said of the increased exports.
